DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM
The drip irrigation system was invented back in the late 19th century. However, the idea of ​​drip irrigation still remained in the domain of ideas and experiments until the invention and industrial production of low and high pressure polyethylene. The patent for the first system of drip irrigation (belt-type irrigation) was granted only in 1963 in Israel. Over the past decades, drip irrigation systems, or scientifically speaking "micro-dosed local soil moistening", have been applied all around the world. Today, more than 5 million hectares of land are irrigated by using this method. Mostly, this kind of irrigation has been widely spread in countries with arid climate such as Australia, Israel and Egypt.

The method of drip irrigation is also used in Azerbaijan. This method has proved its indispensability in certain regions and fields of agriculture as well as in the cultivation of a number of agricultural crops.
 
Unlike wide-coverage watering, drip irrigation allows feeding water in small doses directly to the root zone of plants. An automated water supply system regulates the supply of water commensurately with the needs of a particular type of a crop. It is important that water should be supplied to all plants in equal amounts, irrespective of the micro-topography. This enables to completely prevent the shortage of moisture or its overabundance.

Features of drip irrigation
 
An important difference of drip irrigation from other irrigation systems consists in its positive effect on soil aeration. Owing to the drip irrigation system, the humidity in the root zone is maintained within optimal limits throughout the day. Stable oxygen saturation favorably affects the root system of the plant. It becomes fibroid and overgrown with a lot of active root fibrils. A developed root system enables the plant to intensively absorb moisture and nutrients.
 
Alongside the above advantages of the drip irrigation system, there are several other advantages that are worth mentioning. These are the following:
 
-    Reduction of the risks related to plant diseases through preventing sprayed chemicals (insecticides and fungicides) from being washed away from the leaves during irrigation (one of the drawbacks of the sprinkling irrigation method)
-    Reduction of soil erosion risks
-    Flexibility of the system - drip irrigation enables cultivating areas with rugged micro-topography
-    Water saving by reducing the losses that occur due to evaporation and peripheral runoff
-    Saving on labor force, electricity and system components due to the extreme stability and easy operation of the system
 
Furthermore, drip irrigation enables growing agricultural crops on moderately saline soils and using slightly salted water for irrigation. The point is that, with this type of irrigation, the active leaching of salts occurs directly near the drippers. This makes the root system of the plant, which is concentrated in these areas, capable of absorbing water and nutrients from the leached zone.
 
The system of drip irrigation is applied for watering trees, vegetable crops and ornamental plantings both in open areas and in greenhouses. There are three types of drip irrigation: subsoil, surface and aboveground. In the first case, the pipes and drippers are installed at a depth of 10 to 40 cm; in the second case, they run in a furrow along the rows of planting. In case of the above-ground installation of the system, drippers are installed on special props at a certain height from the ground. The second and third methods are obviously easier to implement. However, subsoil irrigation has many more advantages. These include a direct access to the root system, lower water consumption rate, possibility to carry out agricultural works during and immediately after watering and greater safety of the system.
 
The system of drip irrigation includes:

  • Filtration system. Flushing is controlled automatically or manually.
  • Fertilizer injection unit. This unit makes it possible to perform the feeding and watering of plants simultaneously
  • Controller, which provides complete watering control including irrigation time, water volume and irrigation duration

  • Pumping station
 
Installing a drip irrigation system is a complicated matter which requires attention to detail. It is important to install filters with the appropriate filtering type, carefully consider the selection of pipes for the main pipeline, select lateral tubes and drippers of the required diameter and set them at the correct distance from each other as well as taking into account the planting pattern, the composition of the soil, a particular plant, etc.
 
This is perhaps the most demanding type of irrigation, the installation of which requires a careful selection of the contractor. Ultimately, redoing poor-quality work (as in the case of sprinkler irrigation systems, for example) may subsequently turn out to be impossible. One may need to perform the installation from the scratch. Despite saving on components, professional design and installation, you may run the risk of losing much more than the cost of the drip irrigation system itself.
